The Naturopathic Principles

foundations of naturopathic medicine

First, Do No Harm (Primum non nocere)

Naturopathic doctors choose the least invasive, least toxic therapies available to treat each patient.

The Healing Power of Nature (Vis medicatrix naturae)

Naturopathic doctors utilize the healing power of nature by supporting, nourishing, and stimulating the body’s innate ability to heal. They rely on the therapeutic aspects of nature - breath (air), water, sunlight, plants, and movement - to build the foundations of health.

Identify and Treat the Causes (Tolle causam)

Naturopathic doctors perform a thorough assessment of each patient through extensive history taking and lab testing (as needed) in order to identify the root cause of illness. Once identified, they aim to remove and/or treat the root cause(s) in order to restore health.

Doctor as Teacher (Docere)

Naturopathic doctors value education and strive to empower patients by teaching them about their own body, health, and wellness. Naturopathic doctors are continually upgrading their skills and knowledge through continuing education and research.

Treat the Whole Person (Tolle totum)

Naturopathic doctors aim to treat all aspects of an individual (physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual) and value each as being important in overall health.

Prevention (Praevenic)

Naturopathic doctors value and practice preventative medicine. By optimizing health and wellness in their patients, they are able to increase resiliency, improve quality of life, and help prevent progression or onset of disease.
